frequently asked questions – newborns

How do I RESERVE a  newborn photography session? A ($399) deposit is required to reserve your session date along with my signed contract/agreement. For more details about pricing and packages please see the PRICING PAGE.

Posing/props:  As a documentary style newborn photographer I do not use props to pose newborns. Conversely, I will swaddle your sweet new baby and place him perfectly in your arms, encouraging you to love on and smell that amazing newborn scent. My sessions are geared towards capturing emotions so parent/family involvement is a must. I love to incorporate meaningful family heirlooms into the session, if you have a special quilt from Grandma, a handmade wooden bassinet, or even a special clothing item please feel free to set it out and I will do my best to use it in our session.

What to wear: Deciding on an outfit to wear days after giving birth can sound intimidating. I’m here to tell you it will be okay! Pick a simple, well fitting shirt/camisole and you are all set! Obviously, if you want to dress fancier, by all means go for it! As for mom’s hair, I recommend wearing your hair down/natural.  For baby, I recommend a small tight fitting onsie, sized newborn or even premie for the smaller babies.

How long does the session take: Newborn sessions are ruled by the newborn. If they are hungry we stop, let them eat, and wait until they get ‘milk drunk’…if you’ve ever had a newborn, you know the look! There is no rushing these sessions, and they typically take 1.5-2 hours (on the longer end if baby has older siblings).

How many images: Newborn sessions include an average of 40-50 images. These images are put onto a private viewing gallery that you can share with family + friends. You will be able to order prints, canvas, and other products via the ordering gallery as well as download your digital files.

Short films: Short films are perfect for newborn sessions! Once baby is born, time seems to speed up and the baby-moon never lasts long enough. Remember those tiny sounds, yawns, and movements forever with a beautiful high definition film. Your 3-5 minute film will be beautifully edited and timed to music, creating a family heirloom quality film to be enjoyed for years to come. See more about documentary films here!

Before the session:  As far as preparing your home, I generally look around for big windows, the ones letting the most light in. I most often will use baby’s nursery, a bedroom (with a bed) and/or couch for family photos and if weather permits, we may even go outside! Please do not stress about cleaning your house up for the session, as long as the beds are clear we are good to go. And I am totally fine with moving a huge pile of laundry out of my shot…so no worries new mamas 🙂

General flow of session: As mentioned before baby’s run the session. If baby is asleep when I come we will start with his/her individual portraits. If they are awake we start with family/parent portraits. If (when) your baby needs to eat, I will continue to photograph getting those more intimate nursing or bottle feeding images.
